CNN posts a good article on the September 3, 2010 crash of a UPS plane attempting to return to Dubai Int’l Airport after the pilots reported smoke in the cockpit.
Al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying is was part of a dress rehearsal for last week’s attempted attacks against cargo and passenger flights bound for the U.S.
If AQAP wants credit, I say we give it to them, along with the price that comes along with it. They live among their own, however, in the Marib and al-Kitaf villages whence they come… communities that accept them and give them shelter, protection, and nourishment specifically to enable them in jihad. Unlike AQ in Pakistan’s tribal regions, AQAP is at home, among their families and tribesmen. The only exception to this are the Saudis that have joined AQAP’s ranks in Yemen, by invitation mostly. This, after having been chased out of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where they will never be welcomed back unless they commit to ending their loyalty to AQ. Most of them would only do this as a form of deception, awaiting a better day to engage in jihad.
Back to the September crash… Dubai and U.S. investigators have found no evidence or indication that the incident was a terror act or the result of a catastrophic explosion. When pilots declared their emergency, it was due to smoke in the cockpit, one of the most dangerous scenarios for any aircrew to face in flight. If it were terror related, this could not be kept secret… someone, besides AQAP, would have said or leaked something by now. Nevertheless, whether actual or claimed, I say again, “If AQAP wants credit (for the crash), I say we give it to them… and the price that comes with it.
